As the Salone del Mobile winds down this weekend, make sure you visit Zona Tortona and some of the galleries and exhibits that are going on around the whole area. There are events all over the city from Triennale to the Brera district to Fiera Milano. It is an exciting time jammed with people.

But if you are looking to shop furniture and want some established places in Milan, FLOS and KARTELL are two must visit places in the city.

FLOS was founded in 1962 by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina, in a vision to produce modern lighting. It has since grown to an international success and some of the most pretigious designers in the world are designing exclusively for their line. Their show room is Milan is pretty unique.

KARTELL on the other hand uses “Made in Italy” as its inspiration to create high design furniture using new materials.

Queste Stanze store

Queste Stanze store

As the 2010 Salone del Mobile begins next week, take some time to visit some of Milan’s high design, contemporary, or unusual stores before the city grows by the masses.

One interesting concept store was opened in 2008 by Massimiliano Scavia who decided to turn rooms of his house into a sort of exhibition space where all things are constantly changing and for sale. Unusual items are mixed with antique pieces, furniture and accessories all chosen by Massimiliano himself. They are presented in real life situation so you don’t have to visualize what it would look like in your own home- it’s all right there.

A bit eccentric and fun, this is a store atypical from the standard shopping experience.

Jimmy Choo for H&M

If you are into fashion at all (most likely you are living in Milano), you must have heard that Jimmy Choo is designing a line for H&M. In the past, H&M has had collaborations with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Victor & Rolf, Roberto Cavalli, and the infamous Madonna.

However, this will be the first time that H&M has linked with an accessories brand when Jimmy Choo will launch it’s own line of shoes, with clothes and accessories to match on November 14th. Crystal, studs, animal prints and glitter is rumored to be the theme and not to be missed if you know anything about the famed shoe designer.
Opening in only 200 stores worldwide, H&M here in Milano will showcase this collection starting Saturday November 14th. Call ahead to see if your H&M will be carrying the brand. And be prepared to wait in line.
