Bergamo. Citta’ Alta

Bergamo. Citta’ Alta

If you are looking for another weekend excursion, head an hour east to Bergamo. The trains from either Centrale or Garibaldi leaves every hour which is probably the best bet since you can not drive in the Citta’ Alta of  Bergamo. Once you leave the train station, hop on the bus that is literally right outside the doors and it will bring you up to another world.

Citta’ Alta is the old city of Bergamo and inside the gates, you will immediately feel like you were set back in time. It is a tiny little town, but quaint with beauty. Sit in the main square and have a cappuccino, then head to one of the museums, or to the top of the bell tower and look over the whole city and beyond. If you don’t have time to see it all, you MUST go  inside the Duomo. It is the most amazing inside of a church you will ever see. Its breathtaking actually and it is impossible to not be at awe. Every inch of the interior is painted in images or gold accents, crosses or biblical symbolism. It’s awesome.

For lunch, there are amazing little bakeries that are in the interior streets, or you can find a small trattoria. Go for a day and once you are back in Milan, you will be glad you went.

Sirmione, Lago di Garda

Sirmione, Lago di Garda

For another place to go on the weekend and if you have already visited Stresa in Lago Maggiore and Bellagio in Lago di Como, it’s time to visit lago di Garda. The biggest of the three lakes, Garda is in fact the biggest lake in all of Italy. It stretched up to the alps which provides a hugh contrast in scenery. The bottom of the lake is flat and on day in which the weather is not perfectly clear, you cannot see the other side. Up north, you will have the scenery of the mountains, which is more similar to the other lakes.

Sirmione is a peninsula that jets into the bottom center of the lake. What makes it unique is that there is water on both sides and in the small quaint town, you can see the lake if you look to the right and if you look to the left. In the beginning of town sits this Scaligers Castle. A huge amazing castle built in the 13th century by the Scaliger family who wanted to show their wealth. Sirmione was once a summer resort for the wealthy coming from Verona and also an important Roman city of Northern Europe. For 4 euro you can go inside, see the drawbridges, climb to the fortress and see the town below as well as the crystal water in the moat. It’d definitely worth doing.

In addition to all of this, Sirmione is known for its thermal baths. So whether you go just for lunch, to see the historic sites or to relax by the lake in the thermal pools, definitely take a trip to Sirmione at some point- it is only an hour and a half from Milan.

Franciacorta Winery

Franciacorta Winery

As the weather starts to get nicer and hopefully stays this way, take a weekend trip to a winery around Milano. The region around Franciacorta not only produces both red and white wines along with grappa and brandy, it is most famous for its production of sparkling brut wine.

You can make a weekend out of this region. Visit the tiny towns, the numerous churches and medieval cities. Make sure to stop at the beautiful lake Iseo, but most importantly make sure to visit a vineyard- like Monticelli Brusati’s Villa Franciacorta winery! Contact them and see if you can set up a tour, have lunch and stay for the day. Or visit the winery and go thoughout the region for some lunch and/or dinner. There are an abundance of  restaurants and trattorias and small family run establishments that are known for their fantastic food rich in meat and fish and a food lovers dream after coming from Milan.

So even if you don’t care much about the production of wine, it is always fun to visit a winery and a place you must visit from Milan!

Skiing in Selva Val Gardena

As the snow starts in milan, plan a ski trip one weekend. Milan is a great location to many ski resorts- the proximity to Switzerland and France resorts make your options huge. Here in Milan, one of the biggest ski resorts around is Selva Val Gardena in the Dolomites.

Selva Gardena is 1563 meters high and one of the leading resorts in the Alps. And when you ski Val Gardena, you don’t just get one mountain. The towns of Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva are all within 6km of each other. This means you can ski for an entire weekend without skiing the same trail twice.

The views are breathtaking, the trails are from easy to expert level and no matter who you are and what your ability, you will not be bored. Some trails are so long that you will feel like you are skiing more than you on on the lift (which is what we all aim for). Basically, There is so much to do for everyone- From spas in town to snowboarding parks, and night skiing.

The bars in town are great, the restaurants on the mountain are fun and it’s a must visit place if you like (or sort of like) to ski.

Cooking lesson at Il Caminetto

North of the town of Varenna, on lake como, at the top of a windy hillside is the 8-generation family run restaurant Il Caminetto. Here, chef Moreno offers one day cooking lessons inside his charming restaurant that is rich in history and charisma.

Chef Moreno is passionate about food, about his Italian culture and about showing you how to prepare some of the best dishes in Italy. What is prepared depends on the day and what the chef wants to make. The class in enjoyable, you will learn to make pasta from scratch and be inspired by the dishes prepared. You will learn the techniques in cooking certain dishes and get hands on practice all in a fun atmosphere.
In addition, the owners are incredibly accommodating. They will pick you up from the train station, will offer suggestions on accommodations in the area and offer help on anything else you may need.

Weekend Trip- Vicenza

If you are looking for a good city near Milan to go for the weekend, or the day, head 2 hours west of Milan to the northern Italian city of Vicenza. One of Italians wealthiest cities, Vicenza is a small city yet thriving in culture, history, culture and business.

Andrea Palladio (1508-80) made Vicenza famous for his interpretation of classical architecture. There are twenty-three buildings designed by Palladio in Vicenza and in 1994 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) inscribed “Vicenza, City of Palladio” on its list of World Heritage Sites. Dont miss seeing Teatro Olimpico by Palladio- the only surviving Renaissance theater in the world. (Website for a guide of all Palladio buildings in Vicenza)

Walk around town, through the small streets, cobblestone andthough Piazza dei Signori in the heart of Vicenza. It is a beautiful city, clean and full of things to discover.

***Vicenza is home to the United States Army post Caserma Ederle (Camp Ederle), also known as the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza. Day Trip- Monteviasco

About 2 hours from Milan is this little town situated at the top of a mountain so isolated that you need to take a cable car to get to it (or a 45 minute hike).

There isn’t much to this town, just stunning views and a place so old it will make you want to explore for hours. There also aren’t many inhabitants in this town and are only 2 restaurants, so you really feel like you are discovering some place really special. And old!! You rarely see anything so old and in tact and quite amazing.

The restaurants in this town serve up typical mountain fare, but some of the best you have ever had. Make sure to spend a lot of time at lunch and order up a meal for a king. Trattoria il Camoscio serve pastas that melt in your mouth and are so incredibly good!! And the meats are so tender and fresh. Basically it is the meal you are expecting when visiting a small town in Italy- amazing food, family run, lively atmosphere, and the restaurant staff who know what they are doing. There is no frills, no nonsense and no complaining. Order anything because it will be one of the best meals and remembered and talked about.

And after lunch, take a walk. Explore the town, take some pictures and experience the outdoors. The air is clean, and you won’t believe you were in Milan that same morning. The drive to monteviasco are gorgeous, so take your time and leave early from Milan for a wonderful, unrushed day!

Know before you go:
If coming from Milan, map it out before you leave. You wither have to go through Switzerland for a little (and have to pay their 30 euro road tax) or you go a longer way. But plan it out, otherwise it takes forever to get there
Make sure you look at the cable car timetable before you go. There is one at 12, 12:30 but the next one doesn’t leave until 2.

Bellagio in Lake Como

If you visited the beautiful town of Stresa on lago Maggiore from last week, then this week, take your car and visit Bellagio. Situated in the nook where the lake splits, Bellagio is famous for its name, but before it became a Las Vegas institution, it became famous for its beauty and has remained more upscale than its neighbors.

In Bellagio, it’s all about the views. The gardens and the views. Here are a few suggestions on what to do:
  1. The many gardens and Villas of Bellagio, including villa Melzi D’Eril : built in the early 1800’s for Duke Francesco Melzi D’Eril, (associate of Napoleon). The views are beautiful, but you cant go inside unfortunately.
  2. Take a boat ride around the island. Possibly stop and explore the towns of Verenna or Menaggio.
  3. Explore the town of Bellagio and the quaint stores and then explore through the windy streets and small passageways up and through the many steps.
  4. Walk from town along the water to the exact point where the lake splits. You can have lunch here in a totally relaxing and peaceful setting.
  5. And finally, visit one of the enotecas in town (Enoteca Cava Turacciolo for example is fabulous).
Bellagio is a small town, but there are many things to do (more that’s what’s listed above). Every time you go, you will explore new things and rediscover the beauty of this place. So if you have already been, go again, and if you have never been, it’s a must see place in Italy.

Lago Maggiore

Lago Maggiore is often overlooked by the name recognition of its Como neighbor. Perhaps because it’s harder to get to on public transportation, or who really know, but this weekend if you have a spare day, take a visit because its beyond gorgeous and its only about an hour away!

Stresa is half way up the west side of the lake, perfectly manicure, perfectly peaceful and a must see. What you can do:

  1. Take a cable car up Mottarone (4000 ft) and enjoys views of the other lakes as well as the Alps.
  2. Take a ferry ride to one of the islands: Isola Bella (to explore 17th century Borromeo Palace), Isola Madre, or Isola pescatore.
  3. Visit the villa Taranto Gardens or the 19th century Villa Pallavicino
  4. And then soak up the sun in one of the rocky beach areas after lunch in the square.

To be able to jump in your car in the middle of Milano and be in such a beautiful place only an hour later is a privilege that not many have. Don’t let it go to waste. Enjoy your exploration and enjoy the lakes!
