Cantina della Vetra

If you spend time in neighboring cities or travel down south on the weekends, you know that finding good quality Italian food in Milano without feeling like you overpaid for mediocracy is sometimes a challenge. There are restaurants with great atmosphere and there are restaurants with great food, but what is so hard with having both?!

Cantina della Vetra is a find. Tucked behind the square at Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore, once you see the place, you know it won’t disappoint. The atmosphere is relaxed but the clientele are not underdressed. The service is efficient, but not rushed. And the food and wine is really good.

The restaurant is busy and there is a small upstairs with tables that overlook the downstairs main room. Both areas are equal in atmosphere but they will accommodate wherever you want to sit.

Make sure you try Cantina della Vetra at some point. It’s a perfect spot for a date, dinner with friends or just an enjoyable Friday night. Oh- they also serve brunch!

Blues Canal

Blues Canal is perhaps the only restaurant and bar in Milan that plays live blues every night and that alone makes it a place worth trying. Blues music may not the typical Italian theme, but for something different and definitely fun, you got to check this place out.

The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. Its a place where once you enter, you wont want to leave for a while. It is great if you are with a group of people, or just if you want to stop by on a random monday night.

The aperitivo has a variety of food with a long and diverse drink list, the dinner serves typical Milanese cuisine and the brunch is one of the best in the city. Something for everyone, right?

!It’s easy to get lost with all the options in the Navigli, but this place is an estalishment and not to be missed.

Le biciclette

Converted from a former bike shop, the interior of this bar is unique and laid back. Things like bikes hanging from the ceiling or a clothing line in the main room make the vibe of this bar chill- as best to describe it.

The seating areas cater to having a good time and socializing with your friends. Basically, you are not going to find pretension or snobbery going on in this bar. It’s all for a good time.

The waiters are really cool, the drinks are reasonable, they hold art shows every once and a while and have a great Sunday brunch and daily aperitivo.

And the location is really convenient- in between ticinese and the city central. So drop by after work – it’s fun!

California Bakery

From pancakes to cheese burgers to turkey club sandwiches, everything is of familiar tastes here at California Bakery. It’s the closest that you are going to get to an American meal and here is why:

1, You won’t get a glare when you order coffee and you don’t have to say the ever embarrassing caffe Americana- its implied.
And 2, they bring ketchup with your fries. They don’t ask, they just bring it! Subsequently, you don’t feel like ‘that American’ squirting ketchup, altering the true flavor of the food and amplifying the stereotypical eating habits from the US.
But aside from that, the menu is varied, extensive, and typical American fare. Which means you can try something new every visit for any mood you are in and you won’t have a bad meal. There have been complaints about the bagels being “not as good as in NY,” but of course they are not as good. Let’s not forget that we are living in Italy, and NYC does have the best bagels in the US, so give this place a break. For a city where you can’t find a bagel anywhere else, they’re pretty damn good.
The restaurant is busy, especially for brunch, so be sure to make a reservation. The outside sitting area is really enjoyable on a sunny afternoon, and typical Italian style, they don’t rush you to leave the table which is awesome.
So for a change in fare from prosciutto to turkey or corn flakes and yogurt to pancakes and eggs benedict… California Bakery will satisfy your cravings.

The Garden Bar at Hotel Diana

The garden bar at the Sheraton’s Diana Majestic Hotel in Porta Venezia is perfect for this time of year. Dont be discouraged by the lobby entrance, simply push past the heavy curtain and make your way to the back garden because the place transforms itself. The garden is beautiful and the crowd is late 20’s-30’s well dressed but not stiff.

What is nice  about the garden bar at Hotel Diana is that the setting is chic and stylish- perfect for any occasion or any type of person- but its not caught up in its own hype like its overpriced neighbors. You are able to be yourself and be admired, but aren’t surrounded by people who are solely there to be seen.

The aperitivo offers good quality and a bounty of food and
the sunday american style brunch is one of the best in the city. But it gets busy, so it is recommended to make a reservation.

Sit in the outside garden when the weather is nice, but the inside bar with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the garden is cool as well, so if the weather doens’t comply, it will still be a nice night
