From pancakes to cheese burgers to turkey club sandwiches, everything is of familiar tastes here at California Bakery. It’s the closest that you are going to get to an American meal and here is why:
1, You won’t get a glare when you order coffee and you don’t have to say the ever embarrassing caffe Americana- its implied.
And 2, they bring ketchup with your fries. They don’t ask, they just bring it! Subsequently, you don’t feel like ‘that American’ squirting ketchup, altering the true flavor of the food and amplifying the stereotypical eating habits from the US.
But aside from that, the menu is varied, extensive, and typical American fare. Which means you can try something new every visit for any mood you are in and you won’t have a bad meal. There have been complaints about the bagels being “not as good as in NY,” but of course they are not as good. Let’s not forget that we are living in Italy, and NYC does have the best bagels in the US, so give this place a break. For a city where you can’t find a bagel anywhere else, they’re pretty damn good.
The restaurant is busy, especially for brunch, so be sure to make a reservation. The outside sitting area is really enjoyable on a sunny afternoon, and typical Italian style, they don’t rush you to leave the table which is awesome.
So for a change in fare from prosciutto to turkey or corn flakes and yogurt to pancakes and eggs benedict… California Bakery will satisfy your cravings.
